Hello I’m Phyllis and my FH (future husband) is Calvin. I’m a little biased, but I think our love is pretty freaking awesome!! We got engaged on April 28, 2014, so our wedding planning is in the beginning stages. I will be able to share everything from deciding between a local or destination wedding to maintaining sanity in my Type A world. We both have big families and we want everyone to witness our union, but at the same time, we don’t want to spend a ridiculous amount of money on one day. This journey will be quite entertaining…

How We Met

I met Calvin during the summer of 2009 at a party. It was just a casual introduction. We ended up taking a group picture at the event that was later posted on Facebook. Someone tagged me in the picture and Calvin sent me a friend request.

1st Time We Met

First time we met: It’s funny that we are standing next to each other like buddies and I didn’t even know his name

Over the years, we kept in touch by phone. He was very persistent in getting to know me better, but it was hard for me to let down my guard. (Side note: I’m happy he stuck it out with me; I was a tough nut to crack).

On May 12, 2012, for no reason at all I called Calvin so that we could hang out together. It was such a beautiful day. Perfect weather! I felt like enjoying the day and he’s the person I wanted to spend it with. No clue why, but I didn’t think too much about it or I would’ve talked myself out of it. So I called and we decided to do a movie. We went to see “The Five Year Engagement.” Movie was OK, but there was a line that stuck out, “No cookie is perfect. Sometimes you have to just pick a cookie and take a bite.” We later discussed this and both agreed that waiting for the perfect person had held us both back in the past. It was then that I think the ice around my heart cracked….just a little LOL. I told him I had such a great time and wasn’t ready for the evening to end, so we went to grab a bite to eat and talked some more.

I knew after that date that this was the beginning of something really special. I think us being friends for three years made conversations easier and things move smoothly. He’s such a good man and we fit together perfectly. Calvin is my other half and I believe that God created him just for me because he was born the same year as me, the day AFTER me. Yup it was meant to be! My very own fairytale. Since that first date, we have grown closer, got on each other’s nerves, made beautiful memories, laughed and cried together (well I cried and he watched LOL), enjoyed time with our families and friends and fallen head over heels in love with each other.

The Proposal

This April, to celebrate our birthdays, we went to Las Vegas. We spent the day before my birthday on the strip and after all our activities, we were both so exhausted. I wanted to stay in for the night, but Calvin wanted to celebrate my birthday at midnight. The evening started with dinner, which was wonderful, but Calvin was acting kinda weird. He seemed quiet for some reason. I figured he was just tired and told him after dinner we could return to our hotel room and celebrate the next day. Of course he said no, so after dinner we headed to a new ferris wheel called the High Roller. We were 550ft above Vegas and the lights and scenery were amazing! It was just a magical evening.

My Precious!!

Calvin was taking pictures of me with my phone and then gave the phone to someone on the ride. I figured it was to take a picture of both of us but…it was to videotape what was about to happen. He took me by my hand and looked at me and I instantly knew what he was about to do. I immediately lost it!!! I did the ugly pageant cry and didn’t hear anything he said. I saw the ring and screamed. He went down on one knee and placed my new jewelry on my hand. Later he told me that he said, “Some marriages don’t last, so I won’t ask you to marry me. Phyllis, will you spend the rest of your life with me?” At one point, I realized that I hadn’t heard the proposal, but knew I needed to respond, so I squealed, “Yes! Yes! Yes!” I kissed my boyfriend goodbye and said hello to my fiancé. It was the perfect night, and I won the biggest jackpot in Vegas! THE BEST BIRTHDAY EVER!!!

It feels like I never got off the ride because I’m still floating high. I am looking forward to sharing my journey to Wifey-hood with AP readers. I’m sure there will be many days of excitement and bliss, but there will be a few moments of frustration as well. My goal throughout this process is to try to stay on top of the planning and stay focused on making the day about Phyllis and Calvin….that is what matters most. At the end of the day, I get to spend the rest of my life with my best friend. A man who makes me feel like the prettiest girl in the world. I can’t wait to start building a family with him. This wedding is the last task on our list to happily ever after 🙂

We're Engaged!!
